X-raid Yamaha supported Team celebrates sensational stage win

01/08/2023

  • Joao Ferreira wins eighth stage
  • Ignacio Casale finishes fifth

After their third place yesterday, Joao Ferreira and Filipe Palmeiro Palmeiro were even more successful today. The two Portuguese secured their first stage win on the eighth stage from Al Duwadimi to Riyadh and this in Ferreira’s first Dakar participation. At the same time, it is the first success for the X-raid Yamaha supported Team and the X-raid YXZ 1000R Turbo Prototype. Igancio Casale and Alvaro Leon repeated their good result from the previous day and secured fifth place. The two are now in ninth place in the overall standings. Ricardo Porém and Augusto Sanz finished 14th.

The trend for the X-raid Yamaha supported Team is upwards. In the last few days, the riders were able to achieve some top 5 and top 10 positions. After their problems in the first days, Ferreira and Palmeiro are now doing really well. Unfortunately, they had lost so much time at the beginning of the Dakar that the good daily results were not reflected in the overall standings. Not so with Casale! The Chilean also had his difficulties at the beginning, but has now found his rhythm. He kept working his way up in the overall standings and is now in tenth place.

Joao Ferreira: “I am overjoyed! My first Dakar stage win, and that in my first Dakar participation.  That makes this success something very special. It was a great stage for us. We found a very good pace right from the start. We reached the finish without any problems and with a great result. A big thank you and congratulations to the X-Raid team and my co-driver Filipe Palmeiro.”

Ignacio Casale: “I felt very good in the car today. The side-by-side is just great. The track was not in a good condition for the first 50 kilometres. We found a good mixture of speed and caution because of the stones. Unfortunately, we suffered a puncture 30 kilometres before the finish. We were able to change it quickly and we only lost two minutes. Fifth place is really good.”

Ricardo Porém: “Yesterday we didn’t have a good day. Fortunately, things went better again today. We started from the very back, but we were able to work our way back to the front. We got through the stage without any problems and were able to finish 14th.”

Annett Fischer: “I think we managed everything quite well today and got through well. We only had one puncture. We had to go through riverbeds with lots of stones. You could damage not only your tyre, but the whole vehicle. Towards the end there were many dunes again. They are full of water and difficult to cross. Fortunately, we didn’t get stuck.”

Tomorrow is the rest day in Riyadh. The mechanics will then check the vehicles completely to make them fit for the second part of the Dakar 2023. The drivers will take the opportunity to sleep in. Later, there will be briefings with the engineers and interviews with the press.
