X-raid Yamaha supported Team: Stones make second stage a torture

  • Darkness makes ride even more difficult
  • Tomorrow it goes on to Ha’il

The second special stage from the Sea Camp to Alula pushed many participants to their limits. Almost the entire route was littered with stones and rocks, which caused numerous punctures. Annett Fischer and Annie Seel finished in 26th place in the X-raid YXZ1000R Turbo Prototype, followed by teammates Camelia Liparoti and Xavier Blanco. Ignacio Casale and Alvaro Leon finished in 29th position, while Ahmed Alkuwari and Manuel Lucchese ended the day in 36th. The other two X-raid side-by-sides finished in 41st and 42nd position.

But the side-by-sides were not only troubled by the stones. They also got into the darkness, which made the stony passages even more difficult. Casale suffered between eight and ten punctures at once today. Since the X-raid YXZ1000R Turbo Prototype only has two spare wheels, the Chilean had to repair the damage himself.

Camelia Liparoti: “I don’t think I have ever seen so many stones in my entire Dakar career. Almost 400km of nothing but stones and at the end dunes that we had to master in the dark. We had several punctures, as I think everyone else did. It’s very stressful to drive when you know you have no spare. We had to be very careful. I’m very happy to be here.”

Ignacio Casale: “The stage was very difficult because we had to ride over big stones all the time. At kilometre 13 or 14 I had two flat tyres and we only have two spare wheels. At kilometre 100 I had another puncture, which I was able to repair. But that wasn’t the end of it: I had eight or ten punctures in total.”

Tomorrow’s third stage will take the participants to Ha’il. The Dakar armada will stay there for two days. A total of 668 km are on the programme, 447 km of which are against the clock. The special stage, especially the first 50 kilometres, is said to be the most beautiful of this year’s Dakar. The route leads through canyons, where special attention must be paid to navigation. But some sandy passages also await the participants.
